Cortney Stephenson is an interdisciplinary artist with a dedicated studio and curatorial practice, whose major means of expression has been painting. In 2009 she completed her BFA at OCAD University, and in 2020 an MFA in Studio from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Stephenson's studio practice is currently grounded in the exploration of memory, and different temporalities through material process. She is interested in working with media that exhibit properties that perform dual expressions of behaviour—and particularly how this potentially changes when interacting with the viewer, and their environment. She has been a recipient of the Mrs. W.O. Forsyth Award for Excellence in Painting, recognizing female artists whose major means of expression has been painting, and in the Spring of 2011, she launched My Mother’s Basement Gallery, a website which focuses on showcasing the work of emerging artists. Stephenson has shown both in Toronto and Internationally, and is currently based in Toronto, On.
